I am honoured to introduce you to the University of New York Tirana. UNYT is the first private university in Albania established in 2002, Albania’s first higher education institution where the bachelor’s program is taught in English, and the only institution in Albania offering dual degrees (American and Albanian) for Bachelor Programs collaborating with State University of New York/ Empire State College – USA. Through this innovative and flexible approach to international education, students studying in Albania earn fully accredited American degrees.

Dear Students,

The University of New York Tirana (UNYT) was established in 2002 in Albania as the first private higher education institute with English instruction. As the only organisation representing Turkish higher education abroad and one of the most extensive educational networks in the world, the Turkish Maarif Foundation has owned the UNYT since 2018. As a non-profit state foundation, the Turkish Maarif Foundation has schools across 52 countries with 467 educational institutions and around 53.000 students. The foundation’s sole purpose is to make UNYT even more determined to assist Albania’s talented students and make investments in their future.

As the rector of the UNYT, with this determination and responsibility, I am filled with a profound sense of excitement and anticipation for the academic journey ahead of you. Each of you, as students at the UNYT, embodies the promise and potential of our institution. You are not merely students; you are the leaders of tomorrow, poised to shape the future with your intellect, creativity, and passion.

At the UNYT, we are committed to providing you with a transformative educational experience that goes beyond the boundaries of the classroom. Our goal is not only to impart knowledge but also to cultivate critical thinking, foster innovation, and nurture the values of integrity and social responsibility through diverse bachelor, master and doctoral studies in 29 programs, as well as through dual degrees (American and Albanian) for Bachelor Programs collaborating with State University of New York/ Empire State College (SUNY) – USA.

HISTORY

Marking a milestone in academic standards, UNYT proudly received its institutional accreditation from the Albanian Ministry of Education and Sciences on October 10, 2006 (Decision No. 385). Reinforcing our commitment to educational excellence, we achieved institutional reaccreditation on October 28, 2015 (Decision No. 405).

Nestled in the bustling cityscape of Tirana, UNYT is not just a place of learning; it is a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and aspirations. Our university is dedicated to moulding the next generation of global leaders and thinkers by offering a diverse range of programs at the Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD levels in partnership with world-renowned American and European universities.

Our academic offerings are comprehensive and globally recognized. Students have the opportunity to earn an American Bachelor's degree conferred by the State University of New York, Empire State College, or opt for a European Bachelor's Degree— a 3-year study program culminating in 180 ECTS—awarded by UNYT and fully accredited by the Albanian Ministry of Education, Sport, and Youth. As a testament to our flexible study options, students can concurrently enrol with SUNY/ESC to receive an American bachelor's degree while at UNYT.

With seventeen graduating cohorts between 2006 and 2022, UNYT takes pride in our alums's impressive career and academic trajectories. Boasting a more than 93% success rate, our graduates have embarked on successful careers with prestigious organizations worldwide and pursued advanced studies at leading institutions such as Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the London School of Economics.

In a momentous event in 2018, UNYT was acquired by the Turkish Maarif Foundation and has since been colloquially acclaimed as the "Harvard of the Balkans", reflecting our stature as a premier institution within the region.

December 2020 marked another significant achievement for UNYT as we were awarded a 6-year Institutional Accreditation—the highest possible evaluation for Higher Education Institutions in Albania. This accreditation extends across all our study programs, endorsing our comprehensive curriculum and innovative teaching methodologies.

At UNYT, research is the cornerstone of academic progress and societal advancement. Our goal is to amplify research capacity and output, as evidenced by the increasing proportion of faculty engaging in high-calibre research across various disciplines.
