On May 13th, 2016, University of New York Tirana awarded the title “Doctor Honoris Causa” to Prof. Dr. Rexhep Meidani, in a campus event with the following motivation:

“For contributions and special merits in the academic field, with a moderated role and qualities which are known and widely appreciated in national policy, as President of the Republic, in one of the most difficult periods of the post-communist phase, whose activity has significantly served the stabilization of the economic situation, social and political conditions of the country and normalization of inter-ethnic and inter-state relations, in the troubled Balkan region.”

Over 120 guests participated in this event, as friends and colleagues of Professor Meidani. Special guests included well-known political and academic figures, such as the former President, Mr. Alfred Moisiu, the former Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Skender GJINUSHI, Mrs. Arta Dade, Mr. Arben Malaj, Mr. Kujtim Cashku, etc.

In his speech, the Rector of University of New York Tirana, Mr. Fatos Tarifa mentioned some of the achievements of Prof. Dr. Meidani throughout the years.

“Prof. Meidani has had a distinguished academic and political career. He holds a Bachelor degree in Physics from the University of Tirana (1966), a Diploma d’Etudes Approfondies in Solid State Physics from the University of Caen, France (1974) and has a double doctorate, one in Solid State Physics from the University of Paris XI (1976), and the other in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Tirana (1984). Prof. Meidani has served as Department Chair, and dean of the University of Tirana, Faculty of Natural Sciences. He has been inter alia a visiting fellow and a guest lecturer at various universities in Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and United States. Prof. Meidani has authored and co-authored a number of books and scholarly articles both inside and outside Albania. He is a member of the Academy of Science of the Republic of Albania and is widely considered as one of the leading scholars in the country.

From year 1994 to year 1996 has served as a Chairman of the Board of the Albanian Center of Human Rights. In 1996 he joined the Socialist Party of Albania, and was elected its Secretary-General, a position in which he served until 1997. In June 1997, Prof. Meidani was elected member of Albanian Parliament and, a month later, On July 24, 1997, he was elected President of the Republic of Albania, a position he held until 2002.”

The “Doctor Honoris Causa” Certificate was held to Prof. Dr. Rexhep Meidani by the Founder and the President of University of New York Tirana, Mr. Elias Foutsis.
